John is a lifelong resident of Iowa. He lives in Des Moines, sharing his home with a new puppy and a rabbit. John grew up on a farm in Polk County. He attended the University of Iowa, receiving a double major in Sociology and Social Work. After graduating, John farmed for 12 years. The farming operation had land in Iowa and Minnesota. John enrolled in law school at Drake University where he earned his Juris Doctorate degree in 1989. At Drake University Law School he received the American Jurisprudence Award for Excellent Achievement in the study of Torts. He is a member of the Polk County Bar Association, the Iowa Bar Association, and the American Bar Association. He is licensed to practice law in the Iowa District Courts, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Iowa, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. He received the Iowa State Bar Association Pro Bono Award. He received Polk County Bar Association Honors in recognition of Distinguished Service to the Polk County Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project.
When younger, John traveled extensively. He has traveled to Ireland, England, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain, Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, Japan, and South Korea. He has traveled to most states in the United States, including Hawaii and Alaska. You might pass John on the bike trails training for ragbrai, which he has completed several times. He is an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan, and has survived cancer and heart surgery. John has practiced in a small firm on the south side of Des Moines for the last 26 years. He practices with his brother, who has a medical degree to go along with his law degree. The firm handles many areas of the law, including collaborative family law, mediations, personal injury, real estate transactions, probating estates, and drafting Wills and Powers of Attorney.
